The Rotary year for Freewheelers started with a meal at the beginning of September to discuss ideas for what we would like to do this coming year. Some of which will be organised in the spring in the better weather.
In September some of us marshalled on the Club’s charity walk in aid of the Kent Air Ambulance. This was followed by the Rotary District conference in Eastbourne attended by about 22 club members and their Freewheeler partners. The Christmas season had some of us supporting the Rotary members with the Christmas lunch for members of the Swale CVS befriending club.
In January some of us took part in a quiz organised by Swale Youth Development Fund to celebrate their 40th anniversary of raising money to give a financial helping hand to talented local children.
In February we are having a joint meeting with our partners for a talk by two members of the South East 4x4 Response voluntary organisation.
March starts with a “Poor man’s supper” organised by Mandy and Sue. Anything cooked by these two is always worth eating.
At the beginning of April six of us are going to the Marlowe Theatre to see Matthew Bourne’s production of The Red Shoes. Later in the month if all goes well we will be having a conducted tour of Doddington Place Gardens followed by a cream tea.
In May Angela is going to organise a tea party for Freewheelers in aid of Sarcoma UK which is a charity close to her heart.
At the beginning of June Sittingbourne Invicta are visiting their contact club in Hoorn together with their Freewheeler partners. The Rotary year then finishes with this years Rotary president’s final end of year celebration which hopefully most Freewheeler members will be able to attend.

Never before, in the history of the world, have so many Rod Stewart look-alike wigs been gathered in one place.........probably. In a truly epic event held at David and Mandy Wilkinson's barn, the members of SIRC, together with their families and friends, gathered to celebrate Rod's 80th birthday. The man himself was present in cardboard cut-out form and he was carried away at the end of the evening by Sue Porter who won him in a Golden Ticket raffle. Chris Porter's thoughts on this have not been reported.
The Freewheeler ladies prepared a super supper, including wine, canapes, a pasta main course and lemon posset, which was enjoyed by all and music, a blend of Rod's numbers and more general hits, was performed by Rotary favourite Nick Bosworth who got everyone up and dancing.
Profits from the event, including the raffles, exceeded £3,000, which will be distributed to various charities by the Freewheelers.
The 2023/24 Freewheelers led by Lyssa Phillips have raised £2,618 for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.
